Hope October
October was an exciting month for Hope of the City as we launched our first-ever ‘Hope October,’ a month-long campaign to mobilize volunteers to serve our city. During the month, we organized 63 events! Our volunteers delivered food to needy homes, tutored students, took groups of kids bowling and skating, joined prayer walks, visited street sleepers, accompanied low-income families on a Chung Yeung Festival family outing to Fanling and more. Our goal was to generate 1,000 volunteer hours of service. Well, we exceeded that goal, with 506 volunteers contributing 1,254 hours to serving the underprivileged in Hong Kong within 31 days! We’re so grateful to all our enthusiastic volunteers, and we hope to see you again at many future events.

Taking it to the Streets
As part of Hope October, a total of 60 Hope volunteers joined one or more of our weekly evening visits to the street sleepers who live under a flyover and in a public park in Sham Shui Po. The first of these visits, on Oct 3, coincided with Mid-Autumn Festival Eve, so we decided to make it a night of celebration with the ‘buddies.’ We joined with Tong Fuk Church to serve chicken rice boxes, drinks and sweet treats to some 150 buddies, followed by singing and sharing under the glow of many festival lanterns.

Food Drive 2017
Hope of the City’s annual Food Drive, on behalf of Feeding Hong Kong, was held over three Sundays in October at Island ECC. In all, a whopping 10 tons of food was donated – the equivalent of 23,800 meals for the needy. We received so much rice – 1,590 bags! – that if we had stacked them on top of each other, they would have reached 47 storeys high! A huge thanks to all you cheerful givers, and to all our volunteers who sorted, carried, counted and packed!

Finger-licking Good
What do sushi rolls and cream cakes have in common? They both played starring roles in an afternoon of delightful bonding at our very first Parent-Child Cooking Contest on Oct 7. Chef Esther Sham deftly demonstrated how to prepare and roll sushi, and decorate sponge cakes. Then, it was aprons on for nine family teams from the Hub HK and 14 volunteer ‘kitchen helpers.’ Food Angel in SSP was the perfect location for this delectable competition, and the resulting creations were truly exceptional. Ooh la la!

Touring Sham Shui Po
On Oct 14, fourteen students from China Holiness College got a unique opportunity to practise their English by leading twelve 'tourist volunteers' on a Get to Know Sham Shui Po guided tour. They visited many locations familiar to the students, including Dragon Centre, Mei Ho House, the Garden bread building, Lei Cheng Uk Han Tomb and Apliu Street. The tour wound up with a shared pizza lunch at the school, where the volunteers got to learn more about these students’ lives.
